EDITOR: How do you charge people?
ANDREW PETERS: It’s very hard with Social Media.
I suppose I am using the old Public Relations agency method of a monthly retainer, as it makes me feel comfortable that I am getting a monthly fee.
Recently I negotiated project fees. The hard thing is, new platforms come along that you haven’t calculated into the retainer equation, but you need to engage in it to get the exposure your client requires. If you haven’t negotiated the fee, you used not to do it. But these days, you have to be nimble, and do more, without charging more. With Social Media, it’s about you doing more than what the client knows and you find ways to astound them. One client at the moment unexpectedly payed more than we invoiced because we delivered so much more than they expected.
Social Media is new, and people are still skeptical about it. If there’s something that you can do that will make something more successful, you just go ahead and do it.

My credibility and the opportunities coming my way now have become enormous because I have that attitude. Of course if they want me to do something outrageous or huge, like write a blog about landing on the moon, then naturally I need to charge my associated time and expenses.
